Destination Weddings in Europe: An Interview with Wedding Planner Duo Momentfest on Creating Timeless Celebrations

As a destination wedding photographer based in Berlin, I have the privilege of witnessing how thoughtful planning, intentional design and the right creative team transform a wedding day into a deeply personal experience.

Over the years, I have photographed celebrations across Europe — from elegant city weddings in Berlin to destination weddings surrounded by historic architecture, Mediterranean landscapes and unique European venues. One thing I have learned is that the most memorable weddings are never defined by a location alone. They are created through a combination of atmosphere, storytelling, carefully chosen details and a team that understands the couple’s vision.

For international couples planning a destination wedding in Europe, finding the right wedding planner is often one of the most important decisions. A talented planner does far more than coordinate logistics — they translate ideas into experiences, connect couples with trusted local vendors and create a celebration that feels effortless while still being deeply personal.

In this interview, I spoke with Julia-Maria and Oriana, the duo behind Momentfest, a destination wedding planning studio based in Berlin, about what makes European weddings so unique, how couples can choose the right destination, what creates a timeless celebration, and why the most unforgettable moments often happen beyond the wedding day itself.

Their perspective offers valuable insights for couples dreaming of a sophisticated destination wedding in Europe — whether that means a villa wedding in Italy, a coastal celebration in Portugal, a château in France or an elegant wedding weekend in Berlin.

Planning a Destination Wedding in Europe from Abroad

What are the biggest challenges international couples face when planning a destination wedding in Europe?

Planning a wedding from another country means making hundreds of decisions without being able to visit venues, meet vendors or experience the atmosphere in person. Whether it's an elegant villa in Tuscany, a coastal celebration in Portugal, a château in France or a wedding weekend in Berlin, every destination comes with its own logistics, local vendors and cultural nuances. Our role is to bridge that distance. We curate trusted local partners, coordinate every detail and guide couples through the entire planning journey, allowing them to enjoy the creative process without feeling overwhelmed by logistics.

Why do so many couples choose Europe for their destination wedding?

Europe offers an incredible diversity of landscapes, architecture and cultures within just a few hours of travel. From historic cities like Berlin to Mediterranean villas in Italy, Portugal or the South of France, every destination creates a completely different atmosphere. Many of our couples aren't simply looking for a beautiful location, they want to create an unforgettable experience that reflects their own style while giving their guests a meaningful reason to travel together. Rather than following trends, we help couples choose a destination that genuinely reflects their personalities and the experience they want to create.

Finding the Right European Wedding Destination

What should couples know before planning a destination wedding abroad?

The destination should never be the starting point. The first question should always be: How do you want your wedding to feel?

Once the atmosphere and overall vision are clear, choosing the right country, venue and design direction becomes a much more intentional process.Whether it's a modern city wedding in Berlin or a relaxed celebration overlooking the Mediterranean, the destination should support the concept, not define it.

How do you help couples choose the right destination?

Instead of asking where couples want to get married, we often ask: How do you want your guests to feel? Do you imagine long dinners under olive trees? A sophisticated city celebration? Or a weekend where everyone slows down together by the sea?Once we understand the desired atmosphere, the right destination often becomes obvious.

Planning, Timing and Investment for a Destination Wedding in Europe

How far in advance should couples start planning a destination wedding in Europe?

Ideally 12–18 months in advance. Europe's most sought-after villas, boutique hotels and historic venues often book out more than a year ahead, particularly in Italy, France, Portugal and Spain. Planning early also gives couples enough time to curate the right team and create a wedding weekend that feels relaxed rather than rushed.

What budget should couples realistically expect for a destination wedding in Europe?

Budgets vary depending on the destination, guest count and overall vision. For a thoughtfully planned destination wedding in Europe, we generally recommend starting from around 40.000 – 50.000 €, with many celebrations exceeding that depending on location, guest experience and level of design. Rather than focusing on a specific number, we encourage couples to invest where it has the greatest impact: the overall experience.

Where should couples invest more of their budget?

We always encourage couples to invest in the elements that shape the experience. An exceptional venue, outstanding food, thoughtful design, experienced vendors and professional planning will influence how the entire wedding weekend feels, not just how it looks. Beautiful weddings are never created by one spectacular element alone, they are the result of many thoughtful decisions working together.

Creating Timeless Wedding Experiences Beyond Trends

What mistakes do destination wedding couples make most often?

One of the most common mistakes is making decisions in the wrong order. Many couples fall in love with a destination or a venue before defining the experience they actually want to create. The location is incredibly important because it shapes the atmosphere, influences the guest experience and becomes the foundation for every design decision. But a beautiful venue alone isn't enough. A truly memorable destination wedding comes from bringing the right location, a clear concept, thoughtful logistics and the right team together. When those elements work in harmony, the celebration feels effortless.

What makes a destination wedding unforgettable?

It's rarely the destination alone. It's the atmosphere. The welcome dinner the night before. Long conversations over local food and wine. Guests exploring a new place together. The feeling of slowing down and celebrating across an entire weekend rather than just a single day. Those are often the moments people remember most.

How do you help couples create a wedding that feels timeless rather than trend-driven?

We always begin with the couple, not with Pinterest. Trends come and go, but a wedding should still feel relevant decades from now. That's why we focus on concept rather than decoration. Architecture, light, materials, movement and atmosphere create a visual language that feels authentic to the couple instead of following what's currently popular. Our goal is never to recreate someone else's wedding. It's to design a celebration that couldn't belong to anyone else.

Behind Momentfest: Storytelling, Design and Destination Weddings

If you could describe a perfect wedding in one sentence, what would it be?

A wedding that feels effortless to experience and impossible to forget.

What inspired you to found Momentfest?

We've always been fascinated by how spaces, light and storytelling can make people feel something. Before founding Momentfest, we both worked in the film industry, where every project began with a vision and every detail contributed to the final story. When we started planning weddings, we realised that the same principles apply. A wedding is more than a single day. It's an experience. A narrative. A feeling that stays with people long after the celebration is over. That idea became the foundation of Momentfest.

Today, we work with selected couples across Berlin and Europe who value thoughtful design, meaningful experiences and a wedding that feels entirely their own. For us, the greatest compliment is when guests leave saying: "It felt so effortless."

Because that's exactly what thoughtful planning should feel like.
